Container homes NZ — the expandable alternative
All the transport and durability advantages of a container, without the cramped 2.4m-wide interior. Folds out to roughly three times the width on site.
Expanders® builds expandable container homes in New Zealand that ship in a standard container footprint and unfold on site to roughly triple their transported floor area. Unlike converted shipping containers, they are purpose-built steel-framed buildings with EPS insulation, double-glazing, full bathrooms and kitchens installed at the factory. Prices start at $34,000 for a 20ft unit, $52,700 for a 30ft and $67,125 for a 40ft. They are not converted shipping containers.
Expandable vs converted shipping container
A converted shipping container is a used steel box that someone has cut windows into. It is 2.4m wide internally, hard to insulate without losing more width, and the corrugated steel skin creates cold bridging and condensation problems in New Zealand's damp winters.
An expandable container home is purpose-built. It ships at container dimensions for transport efficiency, then the two long walls fold down on hinges to open a full-width interior — a genuine living room rather than a corridor. Insulation, joinery and services are engineered in from the start.
Why the width matters more than anything
The single most common regret we hear from customers who bought a converted container is the width. Furniture layouts fight the space, hallways don't exist, and the interior always feels like a converted box because it is one.
A 40ft Expander® opens to a floor plan that comfortably fits a three-bedroom layout with a real lounge — something a 40ft shipping container physically cannot do.
Durability and finish
Steel chassis with zinc primer and epoxy topcoat, EPS-insulated wall and roof panels, MGO subfloor with premium SPC flooring, and aluminium double-glazed windows with flyscreens. Optional timber-grain and bamboo fibreboard cladding takes the exterior well past anything you'd achieve with a container conversion.
Expandable container homes
Container-footprint transport, full-width living.
