Expanders® started with a simple idea: building flexible homes that are faster, more affordable, and more practical than traditional construction.
After seeing how slow and expensive conventional builds had become in New Zealand, we began exploring expandable housing systems used internationally — structures that could be delivered, installed, and lived in far quicker than traditional builds.
What started as a small operation has grown into one of New Zealand’s most recognised expandable home suppliers, with 250+ homes delivered across New Zealand and the Pacific.
Today Expanders® works with NZ-based engineers, architects and installers to ensure every unit meets local expectations while remaining accessible and affordable.

Early 2023
Spotting the Opportunity
While living in The Gold Coast, Australia, Shad (Founder) was working in marketing for a tiny home company. Expandable homes were already gaining strong popularity across Australia, but very few people in New Zealand were aware of them. Recognising the potential for a faster and more affordable housing solution back home, the idea for bringing expandable homes to New Zealand began to take shape.
Late 2023
Expanders® Is Founded
In 2023, Expanders® was founded with the goal of making building more affordable and accessible. Shad returned to Christchurch to establish the company, working alongside a network of trusted friends and industry professionals including builders, electricians, plumbers, architects and engineers to bring expandable homes to the New Zealand market.
2024
Warehouse, Trade Shows & Rapid Growth
As demand for Expanders® homes began growing quickly, Taylor and Shanae joined the team, helping strengthen operations and customer support as the company expanded.
Around this time, Expanders® also attended its first major trade show — the Christchurch A&P Show, where the homes proved to be a massive hit, with long queues of visitors lining up to step inside and experience expandable living firsthand.
With demand continuing to rise, Expanders® established its Christchurch warehouse and operations base, and throughout the year delivered over 100 homes across New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, helping more customers access faster and more flexible housing solutions.
2025
Production Expansion & Product Innovation
To support growing demand and improve build quality, Expanders® upgraded its overseas production facility to a purpose-built $11 million factory, equipped with modern machinery and advanced manufacturing capabilities.
Over time, Expanders® homes have been refined and upgraded more than 16 times, with improvements made based on real customer feedback and New Zealand conditions - fixing common issues like leaking and non-compliant materials. This ongoing development has helped ensure customers receive some of the most advanced expandable homes available.
During this period, Expanders® also secured an agreement with its overseas production team to become the exclusive distributor of these New Zealand-optimised Expanders® across the Pacific region.
2026 & Beyond
International Projects & Expansion
In 2026, Expanders® was awarded a contract with the Government of Kiribati to supply 16 tiny homes, marking an exciting milestone as the company continues expanding internationally.
At the same time, plans are underway to establish a new Auckland location, allowing Expanders® to better serve customers across the North Island of New Zealand.
As demand for flexible and affordable housing continues to grow, Expanders® remains focused on improving its homes, expanding its reach, and helping more people across New Zealand and the Pacific access practical living solutions.

Shad W
Christchurch born and raised, Shad studied at the University of Canterbury before heading overseas to Australia, where he built and operated several successful online businesses.
After seeing how quickly expandable homes were gaining popularity in Australia, Shad recognised the opportunity to bring the concept back to New Zealand, where faster and more affordable housing solutions were becoming increasingly important. In 2023 he returned home to Christchurch and founded Expanders®, combining his entrepreneurial experience with a strong background in digital marketing to build one of New Zealand’s most recognised expandable home suppliers.
Today Shad works closely with Expanders’ international production partners, as well as a network of local engineers, installers and trade professionals, helping ensure Expanders® homes continue to evolve and improve based on real customer feedback.
When he’s not working on the business, Shad is usually travelling, exploring new ideas, or looking for the next opportunity to improve how homes are designed and delivered.
Taylor S
Born and raised in Christchurch, Taylor has been a long-time friend of Shad’s and joined the Expanders® team in early 2024, bringing with him over 10 years of sales experience.
Often described as the face of Expanders®, Taylor is known for his easy-going personality, quick banter, and ability to make customers feel comfortable from the first conversation. His relaxed and genuine approach has made him a favourite among customers visiting the warehouse or viewing Expanders® homes.
At Expanders®, Taylor oversees day-to-day operations, working closely with customers, suppliers, installers and contractors to ensure every project runs smoothly from enquiry through to delivery. His focus is simple — making the process as straightforward and enjoyable as possible for every customer.
Outside of work, Taylor enjoys travelling, golfing, surfing, and spending time at home with his cat Kiki.
Shanae D
Originally from Blenheim, Shanae moved to Christchurch in 2016 and has been friends with Shad for several years prior to joining the Expanders® team.
Shanae plays a key role in keeping things organised behind the scenes, helping Taylor and Shad with day-to-day operations, customer support and logistics coordination. Whether she’s assisting customers with enquiries, organising delivery details or occasionally stepping in to help with sales, Shanae helps ensure everything runs smoothly for both the team and customers.
Alongside her role at Expanders®, Shanae also runs her own beauty business, bringing the same attention to detail and customer care into everything she does.
Outside of work, Shanae enjoys gardening, working on house renovations, spending time with friends, and relaxing at home with her cat Gigi.
Detroit T
Born and raised in Christchurch, Detroit has been friends with Shad for around five years and brings a strong creative background to the Expanders® team.
Detroit previously built and grew a YouTube channel to over 1 million subscribers, giving him extensive experience in video production, storytelling and online content. At Expanders®, he focuses on creating engaging videos that showcase the homes, customer setups and behind-the-scenes moments of the business, helping people better understand how expandable homes work in real life.
Detroit is currently studying Computer Science at Massey University, while continuing to work on video projects for Expanders® and other clients.
Outside of work, he enjoys working on his cars, filming projects with other clients, and heading out on weekend hiking trips.
Amber S
Amber grew up working on a farm in Oxford and later went on to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, majoring in Marketing and Communications. She brings a creative eye and marketing background to the team, helping out with our videos, social media, and other content that showcases Expanders® homes.
Alongside working with us, Amber is also a model and UGC creator and runs her own activewear and swimwear brand, Alva Rez. Her experience with content creation and branding makes her a natural fit for helping bring the Expanders® story to life online.
Outside of work she loves travelling, creating content, and spending time at the beach — usually tanning in the high NZ UV whenever she gets the chance.
